E-Cigarettes and your teeth | Hartland Wi Dentists Bailey Family dental

With the new e-cigarette trend, users have been told that the vapors from these kinds of cigarettes do not harm their teeth.

The real truth is that ingesting any form of nicotine whether from traditional cigarettes or electronic ones can cause periodontal disease.

More Dental Problems in Teens Due to E- Cigarettes

Currently there seems to be no real regulations on who can get their hands on these e-cigarettes, and thus kids are dabbling in the use of e-cigarettes under the auspices that it is perfectly safe. The real truth is that nicotine decreases the blood flow in your body.
Nicotine is a vasoconstrictor, meaning it reduces blood flow. As a result, less oxygen and nutrients are fed to the gums. If less oxygen reaches the gums, a smoker has a higher probability of suffering from gum disease over their life.
Since more teenagers are using e-cigarettes, there has been an increase of gum disease in younger people. This is why regular checkups are crucial, especially if you smoke traditional or e-cigarettes. Once the gum disease begins, it can spread throughout your mouth and affect your blood stream if ignored. It is important to visit your dentist like the ones at Bailey Family Dental in Hartland Wi regardless if your are a traditional smoker or e-cig smoker.

Signs of Gum Disease

  • Gum recession
  • Bleeding or inflamed gums
  • Loose teeth
  • Persistent bad breath
  • Sores in the mouth
  • Tooth loss
With less oxygen and nutrients reaching the gum line, your gums can become recessed, bleed, experience inflammation, along with many other issues. For instance, you can be experiencing a loose tooth, bad breath, sores in your mouth and tooth loss. Nicotine can cause all of these symptoms and more. Nicotine can also lead to mouth and lung cancer. Additionally, smokers experience yellowing of their teeth, which requires teeth bleaching and other treatment.

Regardless of whether e-cigarettes are promoted as a “healthier” alternative to smoking, any form of nicotine puts your teeth, gums, and jaw at risk for dental health problems. The best method of preventing periodontal disease is to floss regularly, avoid nicotine, visit a dentist regularly, and eat well.

Dental Bonding, what is it? | Bailey Family Dental Hartland Wi

Bonding is a process in which an enamel-like material is applied to a tooth`s surface, sculpted to an ideal shape, hardened, and then polished for an ideal smile. This procedure usually can be accomplished in a single visit.

Bonding is often performed in order to fill in gaps or change the color of your teeth. It typically only entails one office visit, and the results last for several years.

Bonding is more susceptible to staining or chipping than other forms of restoration such as veneers. When teeth are chipped or slightly decayed, bonded composite resins may be the material of choice. Bonding also is used as a tooth-colored filling for small cavities and broken or chipped surfaces.

In addition, bonding can be used to close spaces between teeth or cover the entire outside surface of a tooth to change its color and shape. Crowns, also known as caps, are used in cases where other procedures will not be effective. Crowns have the longest life expectancy of all cosmetic restorations, but are the most time consuming.

Common Myths about Gum Disease

Gum disease is an infection of the tissues that surround and support your teeth. It is a major cause of tooth loss in adults. Since gum disease is usually painless, you may not know you have it.  Here are some common Myths about Gum Disease.

1: Gum disease is not that common.

Not really, gum disease is extremely common, Gum disease, is an infection of the tissues that surround and support your teeth, and is caused by plaque, the sticky film of bacteria that is constantly forming on our teeth. Plaque that is not removed with thorough daily brushing and cleaning between teeth can eventually harden into calculus or tartar.

2: I don’t have any cavities so I can’t have gum disease.

Being cavity-free doesn’t mean you are in the clear where gum disease is concerned. That’s because gum disease is painless and many people have no idea they have it. Gums that bleed easily or are red, swollen or tender is a sign of gingivitis, the earliest stage of gum disease and the only stage that is reversible. When caught early gingivitis can usually be eliminated by a professional cleaning at the dental office, followed by daily brushing and flossing.

3: Having gum disease means I’m going to lose my teeth, right?

No! You don’t have to lose any of your teeth to gum disease if you practice good oral hygiene. That means brushing your teeth twice a day, cleaning between your teeth daily, eating healthy, and having regular dental visits. Even if you are diagnosed with gum disease, we can design a treatment plan to help you keep it under control.

Hartland Dentist Bailey Family Dental | Dental Floss

Dental Floss

Dental floss comes in a variety of colors, materials and even flavors.

Waxed varieties slide through the teeth, allowing people with extremely tight spaces to floss more easily. Popular flavors of floss include wintergreen and cinnamon. A type of material called dental tape can be effective for people with large spaces between their teeth, or for people with bridge work.

Floss can be purchased in small self-dispensing boxes. Floss can also be purchased in special, single-use holders, which are useful for people who have a hard time wrapping floss around their fingers, including those with dexterity problems or arthritis.

Dental Sealants Hartland | Sealants for Adults and Children

Dental sealants act as a barrier to prevent cavities. They are a plastic material usually applied to the chewing surfaces of the back teeth (premolars and molars) where decay occurs most often.

Thorough brushing and flossing help remove food particles and plaque from smooth surfaces of teeth. But toothbrush bristles cannot reach all the way into the depressions and grooves to extract food and plaque. Sealants protect these vulnerable areas by "sealing out" plaque and food.

Sealants are easy for your dentist to apply. The sealant is painted onto the tooth enamel, where it bonds directly to the tooth and hardens. This plastic resin bonds into the depressions and grooves (pits and fissures) of the chewing surfaces of back teeth. The sealant acts as a barrier, protecting enamel from plaque and acids. As long as the sealant remains intact, the tooth surface will be protected from decay. Sealants hold up well under the force of normal chewing and may last several years before a reapplication is needed. During your regular dental visits, your dentist will check the condition of the sealants and reapply them when necessary.

The likelihood of developing pit and fissure decay begins early in life, so children and teenagers are obvious candidates. But adults can benefit from sealants as well.

Key ingredients in preventing tooth decay and maintaining a healthy mouth are:

  • brushing twice a day with an ADA-accepted fluoride toothpaste
  • cleaning between the teeth daily with floss or another interdental cleaner
  • eating a balanced diet and limiting snacks
  • visiting your dentist regularly

Teeth Whitening by Bailey Family Dental Hartland Wi

Bailey Family Dental is equipped to handle all your dental needs.  Teeth Whitening is one of the services that we offer.

We can perform a “power bleaching” in our office to whiten teeth that are severely stained or discolored. This procedure whitens the external surfaces of the teeth by using a high concentration (35-45%) hydrogen peroxide solution, which is sometimes activated by a specialized light. To prevent irritation of the mouth's soft tissue lining during this procedure, we will isolate your gums and membranes with a rubber dam, a silicone or other effective barrier. Professionally applied in-office power bleaching provides control, speed, and predictability capable of lightening teeth up to ten shades in an hour. Don't try this at home! Our staff will take precautions in the office to avoid side effects and possible tooth sensitivity.

We can also provide you with custom-made, vacuum-formed, plastic bleaching trays for use with a take-home whitening application. In this instance, a gel made from carbamide peroxide (4-7% hydrogen peroxide, safe for home use) is delivered to the tooth surfaces in the bleaching trays. You will need to wear the tray for 30 minutes twice a day, which is a longer process than in-office bleaching. The first signs of whitening will occur after three or four sessions, allowing whitening of up to eight shade units.

Another home-based option, whitening strips, essentially look like band-aids for the teeth. They are capable of lightening teeth by about three shades after being worn directly on the surface of the teeth for 30 minutes twice a day for one week.

What Expectant Moms Need to Know about Oral Health | Hartland Wi Dentist

What Expectant Moms Need to Know about Dental Care, Hartland Wi Dentists Bailey Family Dental

Congratulations! In a few months, you're expecting a new baby... but, in the mean time, your body is adjusting to nausea, weight gain, food cravings, and a hundred other changes. Is this really the time to worry about your teeth and gums?

Yes and no — don't worry, but do be aware of a few basic facts about your oral health and your pregnancy, and how they affect each other.

Being pregnant may make your teeth and gums more sensitive. It also puts you at greater risk for some periodontal diseases, like pregnancy gingivitis (“gingival” – gum tissue; “itis” – inflammation of) and benign growths on the gum called “pregnancy tumors.” You may think these problems are just uncomfortable, but you should really have them evaluated as soon as they develop. Why?

Once upon a time, it was believed that periodontal (gum) diseases just affected the mouth. Today, we think these diseases and their associated bacteria may be involved with the whole body, playing a role in cardiovascular ailments, heart attacks, strokes, diabetes, and other illnesses.

What's more, recent studies suggest that these oral bacteria may be able to cross the placenta, stimulating an inflammatory response that may lead to preterm delivery. Babies who are born pre-term often have low birth weight, and are at greater risk for a number of health complications. That's one reason why maintaining good oral health is so important to expectant moms.

So, what should you do? First of all, keep in mind that maintaining your own general and dental health is the best thing you can do for your developing baby. Eat a balanced diet, keep up healthy habits — like limiting sugary between-meal snacks and brushing regularly — and don't put off visiting your dentist to get your dental cleanings. Those cleanings and a thorough evaluation can set your mind at ease and give your baby the best chance at a healthy start.

If you would like more information about pregnancy and oral health, please contact us or schedule an appointment for a consultation. You can also learn more about this topic by reading the Dear Doctor magazine articles “Pregnancy and Oral Health,” and “Expectant Mothers.”

Emergency Dentist Hartland Wi | Bailey Family Dental

Do you have a Dental Emergency in Hartland WI?  Bailey Family Dental is available to help you if this occurs.  Contact us at 262-369-8633.
A knocked out tooth or bitten tongue can cause panic in any parent, but quick thinking and staying calm are the best ways to approach such common dental emergencies and prevent additional unnecessary damage and costly dental restoration. This includes taking measures such as application of cold compresses to reduce swelling, and of course, contacting our office as soon as possible.

Dental Emergency Procedures Can Help Save a Tooth

  • Handling a dental emergency can be tricky when you or a loved one is in pain, but a quick and appropriate reaction can help save a tooth in danger. The American Dental Association recommends that you become familiar with these dental emergency procedures just in case you ever have a dental emergency.
  • If a tooth is knocked out, hold the tooth by the crown and rinse the root in water if it's dirty. Do NOT scrub it or remove any attached tissue fragments. If you can, gently place the tooth back in its socket or store it in a cup of milk and head for the dentist (with the tooth) immediately.
  • If you break a tooth, rinse your mouth with warm water to keep the area clean and apply cold compresses on your face to reduce swelling. Go to the dentist immediately.
  • Treat a bitten tongue or lip by cleaning gently with a cloth and applying cold compresses to reduce swelling. If bleeding is heavy or doesn't stop after a short time, seek immediate treatment from your dentist or emergency room.
  • If a toothache is getting you down, rinse your mouth with warm water, gently floss to remove food that may be trapped around it and see your dentist as soon as possible. Do NOT apply aspirin to the tooth or gum tissues.
  • A jaw injury or possible fracture needs immediate attention at your dentist's office or the emergency room. Apply cold compresses on the way to reduce swelling.
  • If a loose or broken wire from your braces is irritating your mouth, cover the wire end with a small cotton ball, beeswax or a piece of gauze until you can get to the dentist. Seek immediate treatment if a wire gets stuck in the cheek, tongue or gum tissue, but don't try to pull it out yourself.

Hartland Dentists | Bailey Family Dental | Flossing

Mom always asks you, did you floss?  Well, did you?  Flossing your teeth is very important, here is why.

What is flossing?

Flossing is a method for removing bacteria and other debris that cannot be reached by a toothbrush. It entails a piece of synthetic cord you insert and move up and down between the sides of two adjoining teeth.

Why is flossing important?

Daily flossing is an excellent and proven method for complementing your brushing routine and helping to prevent cavities, periodontal disease, and other dental problems later in life. It also increases blood circulation in your gums. Floss removes plaque and debris that stick to your teeth and gums.

How often to floss

Floss at least once every day. Like brushing, flossing should take about three minutes and can easily be done while doing another activity, such as watching television.

Flossing techniques

"C"-shaped flossing is the proper technique to use when flossing using either string floss or floss piks.
When using string floss: Break off about 18 inches of floss and wind most of it around your middle finger. Wind the rest of the floss similarly around the middle finger of your other hand. This finger takes up the floss as it becomes soiled or frayed. Move the floss between your teeth with your index fingers and thumbs. Maneuver the floss up and down several times forming a "C" shape around the tooth. While doing this, make sure you go below the gum line, where bacteria are known to collect heavily.  The same movement should be used when using floss piks.

With either type of floss, never "snap" the floss because this can cut your gums. Your gums may be tender or even bleed for the first few days after flossing - a condition that generally heals within a few days.

Pediatric Dentists Waukesha | Prevention Tips

As Pediatric Dentists, we often are asked about dental care for infants, here are some simple tips for our Waukesha and Hartland parents with infants and how to take care of infant teeth.
To learn more click here.

Infants

Conditions like gum irritation and thumb-sucking could create problems later on. Babies who suck their thumbs may be setting the stage for malformed teeth and bite relationships.

Another problem that can be spotted early is a condition called "baby bottle tooth decay," which is caused by sugary substances in breast milk and some juices, which combine with saliva to form pools inside the baby's mouth.

If left untreated, this can lead to premature decay of your baby's future primary teeth, which can later hamper the proper formation of permanent teeth.

One of the best ways to avoid baby bottle tooth decay is to not allow your baby to nurse on a bottle while going to sleep. Avoid dipping pacifiers in sweet substances such as honey, because this only encourages early decay in the baby's mouth. Encouraging your young child to drink from a cup as early as possible will also help stave off the problems associated with baby bottle tooth decay.
Infants should be seen by our office after the first six months of age, and at least by the child's first birthday. By this time, the baby's first teeth, or primary teeth, are beginning to erupt and it is a critical time to spot any problems before they become big concerns.

Teething, Pacifiers and Thumb-Sucking

Teething is a sign that your child's gums are sore. This is perfectly normal. You can help relieve this by allowing the baby to suck on a teething ring, or gently rubbing your baby's gums with the back of a small spoon, a piece of wet gauze, or even your finger.

For babies under the age of 4, teething rings and pacifiers can be safely used to facilitate the child's oral needs for relieving gum pain and for suckling. After the age of 4, pacifiers are generally discouraged because they may interfere with the development of your child's teeth.

Moreover, thumb-sucking should be strongly discouraged because it can lead to malformed teeth that become crooked and crowded.
